چکیده

In octilinear drawings of planar graphs, every edge is drawn as an alternating sequence of horizontal, vertical and diagonal (45◦) line-segments. In this paper, we study octilinear drawings of low edge complexity, i.e., with few bends per edge. A k-planar graph is a planar graph in which each vertex has degree less or equal to k. In particular, we prove that every 4-planar graph admits a planar octilinear drawing with at most one bend per edge on an integer grid of size O(n2)×O(n). For 5-planar graphs, we prove that one bend per edge still suffices in order to construct planar octilinear drawings, but in super-polynomial area. However, for 6-planar graphs we give a class of graphs whose planar octilinear drawings require at least two bends per edge.

On the Total Number of Bends for Planar Octilinear Drawings

An octilinear drawing of a planar graph is one in which each edge is drawn as a sequence of horizontal, vertical and diagonal at 45◦ line-segments. For such drawings to be readable, special care is needed in order to keep the number of bends small. As the problem of finding planar octilinear drawings of minimum number of bends is NP-hard [16], in this paper we focus on upper and lower bounds. F...

Universal Sets of n Points for One-bend Drawings of Planar Graphs with n Vertices

This paper shows that any planar graph with n vertices can be point-set embedded with at most one bend per edge on a universal set of n points in the plane. An implication of this result is that any number of planar graphs admit a simultaneous embedding without mapping with at most one bend per edge.

On Smooth Orthogonal and Octilinear Drawings: Relations, Complexity and Kandinsky Drawings

We study two variants of the well-known orthogonal drawing model: (i) the smooth orthogonal, and (ii) the octilinear. Both models form an extension of the orthogonal, by supporting one additional type of edge segments (circular arcs and diagonal segments, respectively). For planar graphs of max-degree 4, we analyze relationships between the graph classes that can be drawn bendless in the two mo...

Simultaneous Embeddings with Few Bends and Crossings

A simultaneous embedding with fixed edges (SEFE) of two planar graphs R and B is a pair of plane drawings of R and B that coincide when restricted to the common vertices and edges of R and B. We show that whenever R and B admit a SEFE, they also admit a SEFE in which every edge is a polygonal curve with few bends and every pair of edges has few crossings. Specifically: (1) if R and B are trees ...
